Environment and Agriculture Committee inspired by blue bioeconomy in West Sweden

What happens when Sweden's politicians step into the heart of West Sweden's blue bioeconomy? Lots of inspiration, faith in the future and a clear picture of the role seafood can play in the green transition.

When the Environment and Agriculture Committee recently visited West Sweden, Innovatum Science Park had the opportunity to showcase one of our strongest areas. We took the politicians on a journey through mussel farms, algae innovation, circular solutions and world-leading research - all of which are already bubbling along our coast.

- It was great to use the time to lift others - over 25 companies, researchers and projects all contributing in different ways. From herring, mussels, oysters and algae to new products, circular solutions and world-class research. My message to the politicians was to keep the blue bioeconomy close to their hearts and top of mind going forward," says Maria Eléhn, project manager at Innovatum Science Park.

The breadth impressed

And the breadth is something to really stop at. Researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers, RISE, IVL, Kristineberg Center and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory are joined by innovative companies such as Sweden Pelagic, Nordic Seafarm, KOBB, Musselfeed, Musselfabriken, Koastal, Algaebra and many more. Add to this collaborative platforms such as the Sotenäs Symbiosis Center and international actors such as the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat - and the picture of an entire industry in motion emerges.

Collaboration as a driver

The key to success? Collaboration. Here, academia, business and society come together to build new solutions together. And the journey has only just begun.

That is why we also invite politicians to the Nordic Seafood Summit in Gothenburg, March 11-12, 2026 - the meeting place where the entire value chain comes together to shape the future of seafood.
