- It feels great to win this award! Sunsurf Solar's vision is to deliver sustainable, competitive and locally manufactured products. We have achieved the first two, and with the help of all the expertise available in Trollhättan, we will also succeed with the third, says Björn Larsson, co-founder of Sunsurf Solar.
Sunsurf Solar's floating solar farms generate more energy than traditional solar farms, while optimizing land use and helping to reduce the risk of drought during the summer.
The solar modules, which can withstand extreme weather conditions with wind and cold, are built together in a system and can be adapted to the conditions of the waterways.
- Sunsurf Solar is playing an important role in the green transition, blurring the boundaries of what is possible with solar energy! Their technology not only contributes to environmental benefits, it enables large-scale solutions, smarter land use and economic benefits," says Eivind Vogel-Rödin, Head of Startups at Innovatum Science Park, who is behind the award.
In 2023, Sunsurf Solar's system was installed at Säve Nursery north of Gothenburg, becoming Sweden's first floating solar plant. In 2024, it was time for the next big milestone. They installed Sweden's largest floating solar park to date at Tångaberg in Falkenberg, which is estimated to produce 100,000 kilowatt hours per year.
The team also secured a contract with the municipal utility Nårab in Skåne, and won the Swedish Solar Energy Award's Achievement of the Year.
Founded in 2020, the company's founders Martin Örgård, Marc Montgomery and Björn Larsson have been friends since childhood and have a passion for the environment. The team also includes Embla Jansson.
Sunsurf Solar was part of Innovatum Science Park's incubator between 2022 - 2024.
The company shows that technological development and sustainability go hand in hand. By combining innovation, buoyancy and solar power, it proves that the limits of solar energy in Sweden are not limited to ground and roof installations.
Innovatum Science Park is behind the Startup of the Year award. InsulinSaver and Monava were also nominated.
