World first innovation for high-tech industries awarded

Last updated: 2022-04-06 08:29

Björn Holmström, founder of the startup NSS Water Enhancement Technology, is one of ten innovative entrepreneurs to receive ÅForsk's prestigious SEK 200,000 grant. Björn's innovation, which he is developing in our incubator, will help high-tech industries become self-sufficient in nanopure water.

-"I'm incredibly happy and proud! I could never have imagined that a rocker from Bengtsfors would be part of something this good," says Björn Holmström.

Björn's startup NSS Water Enhancement Technology (NNS Wet) has developed a process to produce the world's first nano-clean water, completely free of particles above 10 nanometers. One nanometer equals one billionth of a meter.

Can make hospitals self-sufficient

The need for ultra-pure water is extremely important in high-tech industries such as life sciences and semiconductors. At the same time, it poses major challenges. The PCR water currently used in healthcare is difficult to produce and costs up to SEK 45 000 per liter.

- With our solution, a hospital could become self-sufficient in this type of water at a much lower cost and with higher quality! Our test comparing our nanopure water with the PCR quality of leading suppliers shows that our water is in a class of its own.

Big gains in the semiconductor industry

In the production of semiconductors (found in all electronic equipment), Björn's innovation can bring several major benefits. Not least for the environment.

- The semiconductor industry uses large amounts of water in its production. If the water is not clean enough, there is a risk of destroying the components being manufactured. Large factories can use as much water in a year as a medium-sized Swedish city! Chemicals are also added to the water, which means it cannot be released back into the environment. For the next generation of semiconductors, the next generation of water is needed," Björn concludes.

NSS Water Enhancement Technology was founded in 2020 and Björn, together with his team, has been further developing the idea at the incubator at Innovatum Science Park since spring 2021.

About the Åforsk entrepreneurship grant

The scholarship means that the entrepreneurs will each receive SEK 200,000. A sum that aims to support the entrepreneurs in realizing their business ideas. To be eligible for the scholarship, the entrepreneurs must run exciting and innovative companies that have been developed within the academic innovation ecosystem, such as incubators, science parks or innovation offices at colleges and universities. The technologies and services underlying the ideas of the 10 selected entrepreneurs are all rooted in high innovation research and development. The scholarship is awarded in collaboration between SISP (Swedish incubators and science parks) and Åforsk. More info and the full list can be found here.
