Case studies with University West

Participating in a case study together with University West can give companies completely new insights into how automation, digitization and AI can contribute to increased competitiveness and sustainable production.
- We do not deliver ready-made solutions, but help companies explore opportunities, understand technologies and build knowledge, says Fredrik Danielsson, researcher at University West.

A case study gives companies a chance to learn and test new ideas on a small scale and in a safe environment. The results can be anything from a concrete understanding of which robot model is best suited to the business, to strategic learning that allows the company to know what and how to order before an investment.
- "Sometimes the realization comes that it is not profitable to automate right now, but then you have still gained important knowledge," says Fredrik.

What challenges can be addressed?

University West works broadly with companies' transition processes. Automation and AI are developing rapidly, and many companies need support to navigate the right path. It may be a matter of investigating how a certain work step can be automated - such as bag opening at the recycling organization Björkå Frihet - or understanding how digital systems should interact in an effective way.

How does cooperation work?

The collaboration often starts with a first visit. Then researchers and/or students analyze the company's needs and discuss possible case studies.
- "It is important to have a common goal and that companies understand that we are not delivering a finished product, but knowledge and a basis for future decisions," explains Fredrik.
Students can also become part of the process, for example through feasibility studies or concrete efforts in the companies.

Benefits for businesses

Collaborating with researchers provides access to the latest knowledge, but also to the workforce of the future. Many companies see value in students as potential new employees and in bringing in new skills in AI and automation.
- This is the next generation of production. It's AI-based and to some extent robotized. Companies that want to keep up need to be there when it happens. You may not need to be first on the ball, but you should not be last in any case.

Examples of results

  • Basis for investment in new systems or robots
  • Understanding whether a particular automation solution is possible or profitable
  • Knowledge of how AI can streamline processes
  • New ideas around sustainability and circular flows, for example in reuse or remanufacturing

Who should participate?

Any company thinking about automation, AI or digitalization can benefit from participating.
- The best thing to do is to get in touch and discuss your challenge. We look at it together. Sometimes the solution is completely different from what you first thought," says Fredrik Danielsson.

Executive summary

Participating in a case study with University West is one way to:

  • test new ideas without taking big risks
  • build knowledge and strengthen their skills
  • access the latest research and new talent
  • staying at the forefront of the ongoing AI revolution

- It's simply the best way to stay up to date," concludes Fredrik Danielsson.

There is currently an opportunity to participate in case studies with University West through the Smart Transition project.
