Collaborative platform for biomarine industries

Collaboration for a growing blue industry

Marine resources can be a source of sustainable and healthy food, biological substances and new bio-based materials and fuels. West Sweden already has a large part of the country's existing marine entrepreneurship, there is a good foundation to build on and support the emergence of new companies and business ideas.

The collaboration platform is primarily aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises in marine biotechnology and food from the sea. Participants from academia, innovation support actors and other organizations working for the development of new biomarine industries are also included in the project.

The aim is to create a structure for collaboration and knowledge transfer between the various actors based on identified needs among SMEs in the sector. The project will therefore carry out a variety of activities to coordinate, complement and develop knowledge and infrastructure for strengthened business development, innovation and competitiveness.

The project will also establish two test bed environments, one to test anti-fouling methods in the sea. The other test bed is a marine biorefinery to better utilize residual streams from, for example, seafood production. To build up the biomarine industry, the entire chain from sea to product needs to be reviewed and new companies may be established here.

In the long term, the biome industry will grow and become significantly more innovative and competitive. More sustainable products, services and jobs will be realized through innovative business models, establishments and investments, and by giving companies increased opportunities to grow both nationally and internationally. This development thus has positive effects on economic, social and ecological sustainability and helps to position Västra Götaland as a leading maritime region in Europe.
