The project takes a broad approach to both materials that need to withstand the stresses of the sea - and to new materials extracted from the sea. The ultimate goal of this feasibility study is to develop a new center of excellence for marine materials, enabling research, education and collaboration.
The Competence Center Marine Materials (CCMM) has the sea and sustainable materials - as common denominators. Based on these, interviews with industry actors, identification of challenges in value chains and mapping of research and competence needs for marine materials are carried out.
The vision of the project is to identify opportunities around:
- Sustainable materials for our oceans, such as materials that stand or operate in marine environments.
- Sustainable materials from our oceans, such as materials developed using bio-based raw materials from the oceans.
By identifying research areas with future potential, the project aims to become one of the European blue labs that can create "blue careers" in materials science related to the marine environment with support for testing, implementation and scale-up of innovative technologies in resource-intensive industries.
The project works to reduce the carbon footprint of resource-intensive industries and that marine technology has increased the use of renewable materials by 2030. The desired result is that at least 10% of the materials used today have raw materials from our seas included in the production process and to have established strategic collaborations with four other European "blue labs".
