The plant will produce 50 000 tons of electromethanol (eMethanol) per year using fossil-free wind power and recycled biogenic carbon dioxide. The plant is intended to enable fossil-free shipping, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 100 000 tons per year when it is scheduled for completion in 2023/24.
- "The demand for cleaner fuels in shipping is growing, and we expect to be able to develop and build 500 plants by 2050. This would prevent the emission of 50 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is equivalent to Sweden's annual emissions," says Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder, of Liquid Wind.
Hydrogen-based electrofuels is a fast-growing field that, in short, is about producing liquid and carbon-neutral fuels using electricity. Uniper is a leading player in Europe in hydrogen, with several projects under development in Sweden and already operational plants in Germany.
- "Our strong expertise in the hydrogen field will benefit Liquid Wind, while we gain knowledge and experience in electrofuels. Sweden is facing an energy transition where Uniper wants to contribute to the transition to a carbon-neutral society while developing the competitiveness of the industry," says Johan Svenningsson, CEO of Uniper Sweden.
- Within 30 years, we need to increase electricity production by up to 100 TWh, and this development is driven in part by electrofuels. Liquid Wind has a strong business model and our goal is to take a central position in the distribution of eMethanol," explains Johan Svenningsson.
The transport sector is a major source of emissions and needs to transition to fossil-free. And Liquid Wind's business is primarily focused on shipping and heavy transportation, where there is a great need for fossil-free liquid fuels. Here, electrofuels such as eMethanol will play an important role in the future.
- "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Uniper and gain access to their broad and deep knowledge. We look forward to the collaboration and the opportunity to identify further areas where we together can create added value that contributes to a faster transition to a fossil-free world, says Claes Fredriksson.
| Liquid Wind is a Power-to-Fuel company working for a sustainable world. Liquid Wind's focus is to develop, finance, build and operate eMethanol production facilities to accelerate the transition to carbon neutral marine and transportation. The plants will produce a carbon-neutral liquid fuel and in this way Liquid Wind can offer its customers an opportunity to achieve their sustainability goals faster. Liquid Wind is based in Gothenburg and is an alumni company of the startup incubator at Innovatum Science Park. www.liquidwind.se |
