The plans will describe how the DSOs intend to develop the electricity network between 2025 and 2034 to meet future needs. Stakeholder consultation is part of this work. Municipalities, regions and businesses can submit their views, in most cases, now in October. The results of these consultations must be reported to Ei, together with the network development plans, by 31 December. There are over 150 electricity network companies in Sweden and most network development plans concern local networks. This is the first time that network development plans have been published in Sweden.
The network development plans aim to increase transparency and make it easier for municipalities, regions, businesses and stakeholders to plan both community development and future investments.
For municipalities, civil servants and politicians, network development plans can be an opportunity to understand and influence how the future electricity infrastructure is designed. This is to be as useful as possible for their own development and growth plans.
Christel Thuresson, energy and business strategist at Fyrbodals kommunalförbund, emphasizes this:
- Through their planning monopoly, the municipalities have a key role in enabling the network companies' investments to expand and strengthen the electricity network. Close collaboration with the grid companies ensures that grid development supports municipal growth and sustainability goals.
With the rapid transformation of industry, especially in fossil fuel dependent and automotive industries, the demand for electricity is growing strongly in Western Sweden. At the same time, there is a growing need to connect new renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to the electricity grid.
Viktor Walter, Regional Developer at Region Västra Götaland, points out the region's potential:
- West Sweden is uniquely placed to lead the green transition, but this requires a rapid expansion of electricity infrastructure to meet the needs of both existing and new industries.
The network development plans should also include alternatives to traditional network deployment such as demand response and other smart solutions.
These plans can thus become an important part of West Sweden's future energy system. However, as the region grows as an industrial and technological hub, further measures will be required to ensure that the electricity grid can meet new needs.
- For West Sweden to be able to meet future electricity needs and continue its development as a leading industrial region, it is crucial that electricity network companies and municipalities work together. Together, we can become a role model for a sustainable and competitive society. This creates opportunities for an innovative industry," concludes Magnus Kuschel, Innovation Manager at West Sweden Energy Agency , part of Innovatum Science Park.
The initiative Krafttag i Väst - Elsa, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, aims to create forward-looking and coordinated energy planning across municipal boundaries that is integrated into municipal community planning. By raising awareness of energy issues and their importance, conditions are created for large-scale electrification in 50 municipalities in western Sweden.
The parties involved are: Region Västra Götaland, County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland, Fyrbodal Municipal Association, Gothenburg Region, Borås Region, Sjuhärads Municipal Association and Skaraborg Municipal Association. The process manager for the initiative is West Sweden Energy Agency , part of Innovatum Science Park.
