With its groundbreaking robot, Tricylon Robotics will help the manufacturing industry transition to the new digitally advanced and automated era - smoothly, cheaply and more environmentally friendly. Almi Invest is investing SEK 2.5 million in the issue totaling SEK 7 million. The money will go to product development and testing.

Currently, several different machines are required to drill, cut or weld, for example, which is expensive, crowded and hard on the environment. Tricylon's new Monarch 4 (M-4) robot, which represents a major improvement in precision, accuracy and load capacity, will eventually be able to take over several of these functions. As a first step, the robot is being programmed specifically for friction stir welding - an environmentally friendly method that is particularly useful in the manufacture of electric cars.

- "Our robot will be the first to perform friction stir welding with such high quality," says Ilker Erdem, CEO and co-founder of Tricylon. "Our primary goal is welding battery holders for electric cars, but we also want the robot to be able to perform multiple operations at the same station. This is the flexibility we are aiming for - one machine doing multiple things - which improves productivity, reduces waste and lowers costs for companies.

Paving the way for the shift to Industry 4.0

The aerospace, welding and wind power industries are other segments where the robot - capable of handling large objects weighing up to 2 tons - could be particularly useful. In the long term, Tricylon also wants to enter the biomedical field, the robot has incredibly high precision, at sub-micron level, and it is good enough to be able to operate on someone's brain.

The investment of SEK 7 million gives Tricylon a big boost. The money will primarily be used for a Customer Demo Unit (CDU) program that will give customers the opportunity to test the robot.

- "With its disruptive technology, Tricylon is paving the way for an automation shift to Industry 4.0," says Patrik Sjöstrand, Investment Manager at Almi Invest. "This means more efficient production with shorter lead and changeover times, fewer errors and greater flexibility. Here, Tricylon is at the forefront with its smart solutions.

Tricylon co-founders Ilker Erdem and Hossein Abadikhah have PhDs in robotics and flexible robotics and applied mechanics, respectively, and it was during a research project at Chalmers that the business idea was born.

Making control systems available

An important part is to also make available the control systems required to monitor, analyze and service the production machines. Tricylon therefore offers a service where companies can easily and at low cost use a standardized version of the robot's controller for other application areas as well.

Part of Innovatum Science Park's incubator

Since the spring of 2020, Tricylon Robotics has been part of Innovatum Science Park's incubator in Trollhättan. They are also part of the Production Technology Center (PTC ) that Innovatum Science Park runs together with the main parties GKN Aerospace, University West, IUC West and Swerim.

- "We are really looking forward to continuing to support Tricylon's development going forward. They have a strong founding team and their technology has fantastic potential to drive the transition to the industry of the future with sustainability and digitization in focus," says Eivind Vogel-Rödin, Head of Operations at Innovatum Science Park's incubator.
