Bebb Baby to strengthen parents' health

Cecilia Larsson, Founder of Bebb baby

With its ergonomic products, the start-up Bebb Baby wants to put an end to parents' bad backs, which currently cost millions in both suffering and money. "I want to improve the work environment at home," says CEO Cecilia Larsson. The iRock cradle is the company's first product, but the vision goes further than that.

iRock is a height-adjustable cradle on wheels, the long side of which opens to make it easy to pick up and put down the baby. The idea was born out of Cecilia's own experiences during her parental leave with her daughter.

- "I was standing in a tight arch over the cradle, which really hurt my back. If you work at Volvo, you would never be allowed to stand in these positions, so why should we do it at home?

Back problems a major social problem

Cecilia is far from alone in her experience. Half of all women experience back problems during pregnancy and childbirth. Back problems in general cost society SEK 19 billion a year and are one of the main causes of sick leave today. By offering ergonomic products to parents, Cecilia wants to improve their health and reduce societal costs.

iRock is just the beginning. Cecilia compares her first innovation to a song on a full album of so-called 'parent friendly products' (PFP). The concept can be seen as a nod to all child safe products.

- Most baby shops have the child's best interests at heart, and so do we, but we put parents first. If the parents feel good, the children feel good.

Has been granted a patent

Bebb Baby has received a Swedish patent for iRock and a PCT application for an international patent has been filed.

Innovatum Science Park saw the potential in Bebb Baby and in March this year the company became part of the incubator. Contact has been established with manufacturers, distributors and retailers in both Sweden and the USA. A prototype of the iRock is being refined by a designer and meetings with investors are scheduled.

- "My business coach at Innovatum is helping me to structure the work, improve the pitch and introduce me to her contact network of investors and financiers," says Cecilia.

Plan on exchange and rental

To simplify things for parents and save the environment, the idea is that Bebb Baby's products can also be rented and exchanged.

- My dream is that parents can exchange their product for a new one with a simple click in our app. We come and pick up the product that the child has outgrown and assemble the next one.

Cecilia sees great potential for Bebb Baby also outside the home, in organizations that take care of many children. For example, iRock could improve the work environment at preschools. An agreement has been signed with a logistics company whose plan is to supply hospitals with the cradle - as an aid for staff. Cecilia hopes that the iRock will benefit as many people as possible.

- Imagine if women with back pain could be offered an iRock to take home while still in hospital.

From a famous family of inventors

iRock may be Cecilia's first innovation, but it is far from the first in her family. Her father, uncle and cousin are inventors with hundreds of patents and her father Ralf Larson is behind famous innovations and billion-dollar companies such as Arcam, Länsman and Triab.

- I grew up in a workshop, among pop rivets and wood shavings, and stood at trade fairs selling my father's products. I've seen that it's possible to go from idea to reality.

Cecilia took an early leap into a career of her own when, at the age of 14, she started traveling the world as a model for brands such as H&M, L'Oreal and Lindex. She lived in Paris and trained as an economist, but sees sales as the common thread through her working life. She has sold media at Dagens Industri and currently works with biotech as an investor relations manager - experiences she believes can benefit Bebb Baby.

- My experience of sales in a wide range of areas gives me a solid foundation to stand on in my work with Bebb Baby. The fact that I am also an economist and understand numbers, I hope can create security for investors, says Cecilia.
