Innovatum Science Park launches dual use accelerator

In December, the incubator starts a new accelerator program in dual use and defense. The program is aimed at startups and scaleups from all over Sweden with innovative technology solutions that can be used both civilly and militarily.

Through tailored and fast-paced interventions, participants will be well equipped for both civilian and defense-related markets after six months.

- There are many smart solutions developed for civil society that can also make a big difference to Sweden's defense and preparedness. Everything from drones and autonomous systems to smart materials and communication networks. Through the program, we give both startups and scaleups with dual-use technology, a concrete fast track into defense-related markets, says Frida Finnman, Incubator Manager at Innovatum Science Park.

Rapid feedback from the market

The accelerator program, which takes place mostly digitally, is structured in different phases that gradually take participants to market. The focus right from the start is to involve end users, investors and defense actors for feedback, testing and advice.

- We have scaled back everything unnecessary and focus on what really creates value: building, testing, getting feedback and quickly taking the next step. Early on, companies are paired with experts who help the company move forward," Frida continues.

Prototype development support and testing facilities

Based on the lessons learned and insights gained by the participants, the focus is then on developing their prototypes or further developing their products, depending on the starting point.

- For those developing hardware prototypes, we can offer expert help and access to advanced equipment via the Production Technology Center. Trollhättan is a world leader in additive manufacturing with an ecosystem that brings together GKN Aerospace, BEA Systems, SAAB and the Swedish Armed Forces, among others.

The program also offers great testing opportunities, not least for companies developing drone technology or unmanned systems.

- We work closely with a number of test beds where entrepreneurs can test their technology practically under controlled conditions. We also work with the Swedish Armed Forces so that companies can get quick feedback that way.

Ready for the market and next steps

In parallel, the participants will be equipped with the market preparations required in procurement issues, financing, production, exports, regulations and security classifications. As security issues are a central part of defense-related markets, the companies get help to do the right thing from the start.

The program ends with a Demo Day where the companies present their results to investors, authorities and industry players.

- "When the program ends in May, the goal is for all teams to have a validated prototype or product and a clear go-to-market strategy," Frida concludes.
